Given my technical background and the smaller supply of developers familiar with Perl and email technologies, I transitioned from my role as VP of Sales to a role in development after MailCleaner began to expand further in North America. The next year I was promoted to Head of Development. I spend most of my time handle the bulk of development for our open source email filtering software, as well as back-end tools. In additional to this I handle all support requests at or above level 2. Currently I'm in the midst of a complete overhaul of the MailCleaener product to base it upon a new version of the base OS, as well as to improve ongoing maintainence and CI/CD.

I wore many hats in my time at Roaring Penguin. The role began as a Technical Support Specialist with expertise in UNIX system administration. I quickly advanced that role to include Sales Engineering which made me responsible for introducing new clients to the product and providing personalized migration strategies to helppartners get on board. I also took on a development role, contributing PHP, HTML and JavaScript to the product itself, as well as contributions to numerous internal tools, mostly in Perl and Shell. I used these skills in order to take a significant role in lead generation and qualification. These efforts helped the company grow to an all-time high valuation and eventual sale to AppRiver, LLC. I was kept on after the transition and left to pursue other ventures after becoming dissatisfied with my opportunities under the new ownership.

Technical Experience

  • Thorough knowledge of most major UNIX-like systems, including both RPM and Debian-based Linux distributions, immutable and container-based distributions, and FreeBSD. Most especially Debian and Fedora CoreOS/Silverblue.
  • 15 years of experience administering Linux servers with services including Postfix, Sendmail, Exim, Apache, Nginx, PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, Bind9, and Gitea/GitLab both in the context of local installations and in containers using Docker, Podman, and LXC.
  • Experience architecting and organizing other personal software projects.
  • Proficient in the diagnosing and repair of both computer software and hardware.
  • Advanced knowledge of Perl, PHP, HTML, and Shell. Good knowledge of C, Python, Lua, and JavaScript. Some knowledge of Rust and Go.
